The risk in leading a business is the same as in piloting an airplane: namely, crashing and burning. But what if you had an operating system to keep your business airborne until you wanted to land it? How much time would that OS save you? How much money?

Written by the creator of the Profitable Growth Operating System®, The 80/20 CEO: Take Command of Your Business in 100 Days is a detailed playbook for aspiring or accomplished senior-level executives who want to lead their organizations in profitable strategic growth and do so on demand, on track, on pace, and without surprises.

From the Author

Dear Reader:

The journey of getting to the point where I could write this book has taken over 30 years.  I have spent my career as a global business executive in various industries and markets focused on industrial and consumer products and services. Much of my experience has been rapidly turning around and then profitably growing a company.  Throughout all of this, I have been repeatedly asked by my teams if is there a book that they can refer to help them understand the process and journey.

The 80/20 CEO: Take Command of your Business in 100 Days is the result of all of the hard work my team put into delivering superior results in both good markets and bad.  As my friend Mitch Aiello said, "The book stands as a great step-by-step guide to identify the highest performing quadrant of a business, reduce unnecessary complexity, and redirect valuable resources to accelerate innovation, operational efficiency, and most importantly,  profitable growth.  The pages are full of fun and interesting historical references as well as humor and real-life case studies of businesses that were course-corrected through the 80/20 process."  I think Mitch is a bit of a genius.

As a sitting CEO and a published author, I get a lot of questions.  I thought I would share a few:

  1. One of the most popular questions I get is "Why the bee logo?"   When I started putting this all together, I became intrigued by how bees mimic the best human traits.  They make the world a better place.  They're very social, work together, success is found as a team versus the individual, etc.  If the hive has an issue and becomes damaged, they have about 8 weeks to fix the problem, find a new home, or risk going out of business.  A lot of parallels with what we experience in our own lives and careers. It inspired me and I made the humble bee my mascot.
  2. Is it true that you are the CEO of two different companies? Yes. I am the CEO of OTC Industrial Technologies located in Columbus, OH, and Arrowhead Engineered Products located in Blaine, MN
  3. How do you manage leading two different companies? I have a great team and we use PGOS as our operating model. It really lays out a clear plan for everyone to follow. But it's the team that makes all of the difference.
  4. What made you want to be an author? Well, even from a young age, I have always loved telling stories (and reading them), so it was a natural progression for me to be an author. Also, to be honest, I felt I finally had something worthy to tell the world.
  5. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Richlands, North Carolina in a doublewide trailer at the end of a dead-end dirt road.
  6. When will all of the books be out? Currently, I have six books slated to release over the next 18 months. The first, The 80/20 CEO: Take Command of Your Business in 100 days will drop on February 27, 2024. Sign up on our website, billcanady, to stay in the loop.
  7. Where do you get your inspiration from? I have been so blessed with a wonderful family and career. At this point, I like to spending my time paying it forward; where I feel I can make a difference and the team wants my help.
  8. What type of companies does PGOS work well on? Well, I have not used it in every type of company out there. But so far, it has produced superior results in all that I have worked on, this includes industrial manufacturing and distribution; consumer products; commodity products; products sold through two distribution retail channels, online and in-person; products sold globally; and so on. I guess the point is I think it will work everywhere. I'll keep believing this until proven otherwise.
  9. Do you have any tips for aspiring writers? It's a highly personal experience. Find a topic you have passion about and get after it. It can be a bit of a slog, but it's worth it.
  10. Do you have any tips for aspiring CEO? Be a continuous learner and get stuff done.
  11. What do you find most important in a Leader? Set the mission. Let your team find the way. The team will need two things to be successful: A deep understanding of the company's culture and how to use the tools to drive change. Spend the majority of time on your culture. It's important and will show the team whe to use the tools. You will need to win to be successful, but you don't want to wany at any cost. Make sure everyone understands the guardrails.
  12. You have worked in many different types of companies, what is your favorite? For me, there are three types of companies: Public, private, and sponsor (private equity) owned. I prefer private equity because of the clarity of the mission: Get the highest MOIC (multiple on invested cash) in the shortest amount of time.
I hope you enjoy reading the book as much as I enjoyed living it.

Best,
Bill Canady
